Cattleya Orchids
One of the showiest orchids is the Cattleya orchid. Even when it is not in bloom, a Cattleya orchid plant is a pleasing addition to any indoor environement.
The Cattleya orchid is named after William Cattley, the first person to cultivate orchids. To this day, the Cattleya orchid is what most people recognize as "an orchid."
Growing the Cattleya Orchid
The Cattleya orchid is quite easy to grow, but it needs the proper light exposure in order to bloom. Cattleya orchids can grow in reduced light, but without good light they will not produce flowers. They should be placed in a south facing window but should be kept out of direct sunlight in order to avoid leaf burn. The best solution is to filter the sunlight with a sheer curtain.
Of course, the Cattleya orchid also needs adequate heat, moisture, and fertilizer. The humidity level can be raised by placing the orchid on a bed of wet gravel. This gravel should be kept moist all the time, and the plant itself should be watered about once a week. A dilute application of liquid fertilizer can be applied every two weeks.
You can tell the health of a Cattleya by the color of its greens. Ideally they will have a slightly yellowish shade. If they are dark green the Cattleya is not getting enough light.
