How Do I Grow Orchids Indoors?

Is it possible to grow orchids indoors?

Most certainly! There are several types of orchids which are suitable as indoor orchids. It's important to select an indoor orchid which blooms in the light and temperature conditions of your own home.

Moth Orchids - The Ideal Indoor Orchid

A very good choice for an indoor orchid is the Moth orchid (Phalaenopsis). These The Moth Orchid makes a good indoor orchidare good as indoor orchids because they have long lasting blooms and if the plant is healthy it can bloom twice a year.

Moth orchids have multi-flowered spikes which range from white to lavender in color. They sometimes have stripes and a contrasting center color.

Lady's Slippers for Indoor Orchids

Another good choice for an indoor orchid is Lady's Slippers (Paphiopedilum). The flowers on this type of indoor orchid can last anywhere from 1 to 3 months, and older plants can bloom throughout the year.

Lady's Slippers have an exotic look with unusual warts, hairs, and striped colors. Some people dislike Lady's Slippers because of their unusual appearance, but most people adore them for their spectacular blooms.

Conditions for Indoor Orchids

Most indoor orchids prefer a bright filtered light. An east-facing window is the best choice, but south or west-facing windows can also work if the indoor orchids are kept at a distance from the window to prevent the leaves from scorching in the direct sun. It is also a good idea to filter the sunlight with sheer curtains.

Indoor orchids need the correct amount of light. Too little light and the leaves will become dark green and the flowers will not bloom. Too much light can burn the indoor orchid.

Indoor orchids also need sufficient humidity. You can keep the humidity level high by placing a water-filled saucer underneath the indoor orchids. You can also mist the leaves once a day or install a humidifier. Remember though, indoor orchids need a dry atmosphere at night or they may succumb to disease.

Temperatures for Indoor Orchids

There are various types of Lady's Slippers. Some prefer warm temperatures while others prefer cooler air. Lady's Slippers which are from warm climates usually have mottled leaves, and those with solid green leaves prefer cooler temperatures.

Lady's Slippers are a good choice for indoor orchidsLady's Slippers from warm climates and Moth Orchids usually do fine in regular indoor temperatures i.e. 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and down to between 60 to 65 degrees at night.

Lady's Slippers from cooler climates do well with temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees during the day and down to 50 to 55 at night.

Indoor orchids can tolerate warmer or colder temperatures that these, but in order to bloom, they must have a nighttime temperature which is about 15 degrees cooler than the daytime temperature.

If they are exposed to warmer temperatures, indoor orchids need more humidity and good air circulation. Cooler temperatures may cause them to stop growing.

Indoor orchids can be watered once or twice a week during the summer months and during periods of vigorous growth. During the cooler months the watering schedule can be reduced to once every two weeks. Fertilizer should be given about once a month.

Keep roots evenly moist all year. Water once or twice a week in warm weather and during vigorous growth, less often as growth slows. During active growth, fertilize with a quarter- to half-strength solution at least once a month.

Thanks so much! I'm going to try to grow an indoor orchid, and had no idea where to
start until I read your informative article. Now I know to look for a Lady's
Slipper orchid from a cooler climate, which is 100% more than I knew 5 minutes ago!

I have what I think is a moth Orchid.
I had the first lot of bloom and now waiting for the two new buds to flower. I need to know if I should repot the plant. It has 6 strong leaves at the stem, but the shoot is only about 15inches long and ready to bloom, is that because the pot is confining the plant?

soraya:

If the orchid is actively growing you can water it 2 or 3 times a week with room temperature water. Orchids go through a dormant period each year - usually in the winter, when you can cut the watering back to once every 1 or 2 weeks.

Enjoy your new love!

I bought an orchid in a small plastic "pot", i need to how to "repot" this and if it would be alright to put it in a brass planter? do I use regular potting soil? rocks, moss? not sure! HELP!

Christine:

Don't use a brass planter, unless you're going to keep the orchid in the plastic and use the brass planter just for decoration. The brass will leach harmful toxins into the soil.

Use a potting medium that is suitable for the type of orchid you have. Ask at a nursery and tell them the type of orchid you have and they will steer you in the right direction.

I have just lost the flowers on my orchid (had it over three months) can anyone tell me what to do next and how long I will wait for the new blooms to happen, or is that it for my moth orchid. I have been watering the roots whenever they turn white, to restore them back to green, the leaf section is a very vibrant green, so I didn't think it would be ready to replace.
Please help! - owner of very naked orchid!

You might have to wait a few months before they bloom again. Just keep them in good condition by following the lighting and water recommendations. My orchids usually sleep for a 3-4 months after a period of blooming.

Help! Do not like to see neglected plants in the supermarket I use. At different times have picked up three orchids, two had good leaves but only the dead flowers were on them, one seems to have disappeared, the small one is struggling, if I am patient will they come through again? The third is quite large and had lovely white flowers, these have since died off but I now have three outer healthy looking shoots but small bulbous leaves in the centre with what looks like some form of jelly inside. I know they were cheaper but I do not like to give up on my plants. So far have read all your comments as to how to keep them so I am trying.

I'm leaving the country so reluctantly selling my orchid (argh!) Only trouble is I know nothing about them really including which type I actually have! Does anybody know a good site I can visit to spot it by picture? It's an indoor one and the flowers are quite small with a very pale yellow/lemon colour. Anybody know what I'm describing??!

Leann,

I think you should add some drainage holes. Orchids do not like to sit in water.

My flowers have all fallen off. How far down the stem do I cut off to encourage new growth.
Paul

Sue and Julie:

You can cut off the long stems where the flowers have fallen off. The plant may have gone into a dormant stage, so cut back on water for a while (2 - 3 months) and them resume water and fertilizer feedings as before.

Hi, i was given a moth orchid around 3 and a half months ago which was in flower. The flowers are now all dropping off and the stems have gone a sort of yellowy white colour - can anyone tell me if this is normal and I should just water it occasioanlly until it flowers again or does the stem colour mean I have done something wrong? Thanks Alex
