How Do I Grow Orchids Indoors?
Is it possible to grow orchids indoors?
Most certainly! There are several types of orchids which are suitable as indoor orchids. It's important to select an indoor orchid which blooms in the light and temperature conditions of your own home.
Moth Orchids - The Ideal Indoor Orchid
A very good choice for an indoor orchid is the Moth orchid (Phalaenopsis). These are good as indoor orchids because they have long lasting blooms and if the plant is healthy it can bloom twice a year.
Moth orchids have multi-flowered spikes which range from white to lavender in color. They sometimes have stripes and a contrasting center color.
Lady's Slippers for Indoor Orchids
Another good choice for an indoor orchid is Lady's Slippers (Paphiopedilum). The flowers on this type of indoor orchid can last anywhere from 1 to 3 months, and older plants can bloom throughout the year.
Lady's Slippers have an exotic look with unusual warts, hairs, and striped colors. Some people dislike Lady's Slippers because of their unusual appearance, but most people adore them for their spectacular blooms.
Conditions for Indoor Orchids
Most indoor orchids prefer a bright filtered light. An east-facing window is the best choice, but south or west-facing windows can also work if the indoor orchids are kept at a distance from the window to prevent the leaves from scorching in the direct sun. It is also a good idea to filter the sunlight with sheer curtains.
Indoor orchids need the correct amount of light. Too little light and the leaves will become dark green and the flowers will not bloom. Too much light can burn the indoor orchid.
Indoor orchids also need sufficient humidity. You can keep the humidity level high by placing a water-filled saucer underneath the indoor orchids. You can also mist the leaves once a day or install a humidifier. Remember though, indoor orchids need a dry atmosphere at night or they may succumb to disease.
Temperatures for Indoor Orchids
There are various types of Lady's Slippers. Some prefer warm temperatures while others prefer cooler air. Lady's Slippers which are from warm climates usually have mottled leaves, and those with solid green leaves prefer cooler temperatures.
Lady's Slippers from warm climates and Moth Orchids usually do fine in regular indoor temperatures i.e. 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and down to between 60 to 65 degrees at night.
Lady's Slippers from cooler climates do well with temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees during the day and down to 50 to 55 at night.
Indoor orchids can tolerate warmer or colder temperatures that these, but in order to bloom, they must have a nighttime temperature which is about 15 degrees cooler than the daytime temperature.
If they are exposed to warmer temperatures, indoor orchids need more humidity and good air circulation. Cooler temperatures may cause them to stop growing.
Indoor orchids can be watered once or twice a week during the summer months and during periods of vigorous growth. During the cooler months the watering schedule can be reduced to once every two weeks. Fertilizer should be given about once a month.
Keep roots evenly moist all year. Water once or twice a week in warm weather and during vigorous growth, less often as growth slows. During active growth, fertilize with a quarter- to half-strength solution at least once a month.

Thanks so much! I'm going to try to grow an indoor orchid, and had no idea
where to
start until I read your informative article. Now I know to look for a
Lady's
Slipper orchid from a cooler climate, which is 100% more than I knew 5
minutes ago!

I have what I think is a moth Orchid.
I had the first lot of bloom and now waiting for the two new buds to
flower. I need to know if I should repot the plant. It has 6 strong leaves
at the stem, but the shoot is only about 15inches long and ready to bloom,
is that because the pot is confining the plant?

soraya:
If the orchid is actively growing you can water it 2 or 3 times a week with
room temperature water. Orchids go through a dormant period each year -
usually in the winter, when you can cut the watering back to once every 1
or 2 weeks.
Enjoy your new love!

I bought an orchid in a small plastic "pot", i need to how to "repot" this
and if it would be alright to put it in a brass planter? do I use regular
potting soil? rocks, moss? not sure! HELP!
Paul
25 Feb 2008, 19:23
Christine:
Don't use a brass planter, unless you're going to keep the orchid in the
plastic and use the brass planter just for decoration. The brass will leach
harmful toxins into the soil.
Use a potting medium that is suitable for the type of orchid you have. Ask
at a nursery and tell them the type of orchid you have and they will steer
you in the right direction.

I have just lost the flowers on my orchid (had it over three months) can
anyone tell me what to do next and how long I will wait for the new blooms
to happen, or is that it for my moth orchid. I have been watering the
roots whenever they turn white, to restore them back to green, the leaf
section is a very vibrant green, so I didn't think it would be ready to
replace.
Please help! - owner of very naked orchid!

You might have to wait a few months before they bloom again. Just keep them
in good condition by following the lighting and water recommendations. My
orchids usually sleep for a 3-4 months after a period of blooming.

Help! Do not like to see neglected plants in the supermarket I use. At
different times have picked up three orchids, two had good leaves but only
the dead flowers were on them, one seems to have disappeared, the small one
is struggling, if I am patient will they come through again? The third is
quite large and had lovely white flowers, these have since died off but I
now have three outer healthy looking shoots but small bulbous leaves in the
centre with what looks like some form of jelly inside. I know they were
cheaper but I do not like to give up on my plants. So far have read all
your comments as to how to keep them so I am trying.

trouble is I know nothing about them really including which type I actually

colour. Anybody know what I'm describing??!

Paul
20 Jul 2008, 09:13
Sue and Julie:
You can cut off the long stems where the flowers have fallen off. The plant
may have gone into a dormant stage, so cut back on water for a while (2 - 3
months) and them resume water and fertilizer feedings as before.

After having moved our furniture and belongings back to our condo after
extensive renovation, 5 days ago I brought over my gorgeous Moth orchid
that has been thriving magnificiently where we have stayed for a year. The
furniture and wardrobes were stored for a year in air conditioned pods. It
all came back musty smelling and low and behold many wardrobes and boxes
had bugs that had eaten away at clothing. Obviously everything was
imediately thrown out and cleaned. The orchid, within 5 days lost all
bloooms and the branch turned yellow,...dead! The leaves remained green
the same as before. There has been no sun, windows covered with sheers and
condo kept very cool.Could there be toxidity in the air that would effect
it? Please help, I want to keep orchids in my home.

I have 6 different kinds of orchids. They've always been my fav. flower.
Only one blooms regularly. Likely the others are still to young. The Phal,
which blooms every 4 months or so, is sporting some keikis now. I will be
removing the baby plants (keikis) in the Spring and potting them
separately. I will also trim up the roots, any that are not fat, juicy,
and wormy looking must go. I don't trim aerial ones unless they're dying.
And I don't trim stems that are dead. Now if they fall off when I barely
tap them that's okay.

I was recently given an orchid which I've loved, but I'm worried it's not
doing so well. The last three flowers failed to open and dropped off as
buds. No new buds have appeared although the stems were growing. On
advice I moved the plant to better light conditions, closer to the West
facing window (although the damage may have already been done). In the
past two days the tips of the stems have begun to turn brown, and one of
the larger leaves has effectively wilted. Any ideas what I've done to
cause this, and any help would be gratefully received on what I should do
to save it.

I have a moth orchid. One stem has the last flower that bloomed on it and
it is starting to wilt. The other flowers have already bloomed and wilted,

This page was very helpful! I also have concerns though. I looked at it

legs (aphids?) They are on all the flowers, and a lot of them. I am

I just became interested in groing orchids indoors. You mentioned they
require sufficient humidity. How much is considered sufficient? Our home
heating system has a special indicator for humitity. What level of humidity
or % of humitity should I adjust?
Also, I am new to your web site. How can I obtain the answers to the
questions that other people have asked you? I'm obviously not computer
literate!
Thank you for your help.

I have a wonderful orchid that has given me multiple blooms over a period
of a year. Currently all the blooms are off and I'm left with the "naked"
stakes. My question is, do I cut these back at this time and where should I
cut? There are 2 stalks aprox. 16" high each. Also, those crazy roots
that grow outside the pot...what the heck do you do with those?
I too am new to the site aned would like to know how to get the answers to
all the wonderful questions people ask!
Thanks!

I have an orchid inside my apartment, recently i've noticed white fluffy
stuff around the leave growth coming up from the bulbs. I'm assuming this
is either scale or mealy bugs. On the leafy portion of the plant I'm
wiping the leaf with alcohol swabs, however, I'm not quite sure what to use
of the new foalage coming through. Do you have any suggestions?
Regards
Storm

Good Day,
I have a zygopetalum which I keep indoors at my office. I have noticed a
few black spots on some leaves. I cut the spot off of the tip, but now the
dark spot has returned. What could be the cause. I also think that the
roots need to be evaluated because as I water it the water just runs right
out. Please help

I have a phealonopsis (sp)which was given to me about 10 years ago,
apparently I have been lucky in my care but the ariel things are driving me
crazy there are so many and I don't know where to cut. Some have a little
green (?) colored point on them and I suspect these are living. However I
want to remove the long ones-too many.I hate to ask this when there
there is so much tragedy in Haiti

Hi, i think my orchid is a Lady's Slipper, but not sure, i've had it since
last year, i let it die down after it had finished flowering and nurtured
it and it is now flowered again, 9flowers in all, with 6 plain green
leaves. what do i do about repotting it, one root is protruding out of the
bottom of pot and is a nice green colour, so healthy, but all others are
crambed in the small pot. Will i loose it if i go ahead and re-pot? I would
like more flowers to grow later on. Its so pretty.I can send photo if
needed.

I am new to orchids. bought one and have had it for abt 1 year. the flowers
fell off after abt 2 months and I just left it alone, ( only watered it
