How Do I Grow Orchids Indoors?

Is it possible to grow orchids indoors?

Most certainly! There are several types of orchids which are suitable as indoor orchids. It's important to select an indoor orchid which blooms in the light and temperature conditions of your own home.

Moth Orchids - The Ideal Indoor Orchid

A very good choice for an indoor orchid is the Moth orchid (Phalaenopsis). These The Moth Orchid makes a good indoor orchidare good as indoor orchids because they have long lasting blooms and if the plant is healthy it can bloom twice a year.

Moth orchids have multi-flowered spikes which range from white to lavender in color. They sometimes have stripes and a contrasting center color.

Lady's Slippers for Indoor Orchids

Another good choice for an indoor orchid is Lady's Slippers (Paphiopedilum). The flowers on this type of indoor orchid can last anywhere from 1 to 3 months, and older plants can bloom throughout the year.

Lady's Slippers have an exotic look with unusual warts, hairs, and striped colors. Some people dislike Lady's Slippers because of their unusual appearance, but most people adore them for their spectacular blooms.

Conditions for Indoor Orchids

Most indoor orchids prefer a bright filtered light. An east-facing window is the best choice, but south or west-facing windows can also work if the indoor orchids are kept at a distance from the window to prevent the leaves from scorching in the direct sun. It is also a good idea to filter the sunlight with sheer curtains.

Indoor orchids need the correct amount of light. Too little light and the leaves will become dark green and the flowers will not bloom. Too much light can burn the indoor orchid.

Indoor orchids also need sufficient humidity. You can keep the humidity level high by placing a water-filled saucer underneath the indoor orchids. You can also mist the leaves once a day or install a humidifier. Remember though, indoor orchids need a dry atmosphere at night or they may succumb to disease.

Temperatures for Indoor Orchids

There are various types of Lady's Slippers. Some prefer warm temperatures while others prefer cooler air. Lady's Slippers which are from warm climates usually have mottled leaves, and those with solid green leaves prefer cooler temperatures.

Lady's Slippers are a good choice for indoor orchidsLady's Slippers from warm climates and Moth Orchids usually do fine in regular indoor temperatures i.e. 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and down to between 60 to 65 degrees at night.

Lady's Slippers from cooler climates do well with temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees during the day and down to 50 to 55 at night.

Indoor orchids can tolerate warmer or colder temperatures that these, but in order to bloom, they must have a nighttime temperature which is about 15 degrees cooler than the daytime temperature.

If they are exposed to warmer temperatures, indoor orchids need more humidity and good air circulation. Cooler temperatures may cause them to stop growing.

Indoor orchids can be watered once or twice a week during the summer months and during periods of vigorous growth. During the cooler months the watering schedule can be reduced to once every two weeks. Fertilizer should be given about once a month.

Keep roots evenly moist all year. Water once or twice a week in warm weather and during vigorous growth, less often as growth slows. During active growth, fertilize with a quarter- to half-strength solution at least once a month.

Thanks so much! I'm going to try to grow an indoor orchid, and had no idea where to
start until I read your informative article. Now I know to look for a Lady's
Slipper orchid from a cooler climate, which is 100% more than I knew 5 minutes ago!

I have what I think is a moth Orchid.
I had the first lot of bloom and now waiting for the two new buds to flower. I need to know if I should repot the plant. It has 6 strong leaves at the stem, but the shoot is only about 15inches long and ready to bloom, is that because the pot is confining the plant?

does anyone know how often to water indoor orchids and what water temp? a friend of mine gave me what looks like a moth orchid and it's my new love<3
susu
29 Jan 2008, 19:25
soraya:

If the orchid is actively growing you can water it 2 or 3 times a week with room temperature water. Orchids go through a dormant period each year - usually in the winter, when you can cut the watering back to once every 1 or 2 weeks.

Enjoy your new love!

I bought an orchid in a small plastic "pot", i need to how to "repot" this and if it would be alright to put it in a brass planter? do I use regular potting soil? rocks, moss? not sure! HELP!
Paul
25 Feb 2008, 19:23
Christine:

Don't use a brass planter, unless you're going to keep the orchid in the plastic and use the brass planter just for decoration. The brass will leach harmful toxins into the soil.

Use a potting medium that is suitable for the type of orchid you have. Ask at a nursery and tell them the type of orchid you have and they will steer you in the right direction.

I have just lost the flowers on my orchid (had it over three months) can anyone tell me what to do next and how long I will wait for the new blooms to happen, or is that it for my moth orchid. I have been watering the roots whenever they turn white, to restore them back to green, the leaf section is a very vibrant green, so I didn't think it would be ready to replace.
Please help! - owner of very naked orchid!

You might have to wait a few months before they bloom again. Just keep them in good condition by following the lighting and water recommendations. My orchids usually sleep for a 3-4 months after a period of blooming.

Help! Do not like to see neglected plants in the supermarket I use. At different times have picked up three orchids, two had good leaves but only the dead flowers were on them, one seems to have disappeared, the small one is struggling, if I am patient will they come through again? The third is quite large and had lovely white flowers, these have since died off but I now have three outer healthy looking shoots but small bulbous leaves in the centre with what looks like some form of jelly inside. I know they were cheaper but I do not like to give up on my plants. So far have read all your comments as to how to keep them so I am trying.

I'm leaving the country so reluctantly selling my orchid (argh!) Only trouble is I know nothing about them really including which type I actually have! Does anybody know a good site I can visit to spot it by picture? It's an indoor one and the flowers are quite small with a very pale yellow/lemon colour. Anybody know what I'm describing??!

My flowers have all fallen off. How far down the stem do I cut off to encourage new growth.
Paul
20 Jul 2008, 09:13
Sue and Julie:

You can cut off the long stems where the flowers have fallen off. The plant may have gone into a dormant stage, so cut back on water for a while (2 - 3 months) and them resume water and fertilizer feedings as before.

After having moved our furniture and belongings back to our condo after extensive renovation, 5 days ago I brought over my gorgeous Moth orchid that has been thriving magnificiently where we have stayed for a year. The furniture and wardrobes were stored for a year in air conditioned pods. It all came back musty smelling and low and behold many wardrobes and boxes had bugs that had eaten away at clothing. Obviously everything was imediately thrown out and cleaned. The orchid, within 5 days lost all bloooms and the branch turned yellow,...dead! The leaves remained green the same as before. There has been no sun, windows covered with sheers and condo kept very cool.Could there be toxidity in the air that would effect it? Please help, I want to keep orchids in my home.

Thank You,

I have 6 different kinds of orchids. They've always been my fav. flower. Only one blooms regularly. Likely the others are still to young. The Phal, which blooms every 4 months or so, is sporting some keikis now. I will be removing the baby plants (keikis) in the Spring and potting them separately. I will also trim up the roots, any that are not fat, juicy, and wormy looking must go. I don't trim aerial ones unless they're dying. And I don't trim stems that are dead. Now if they fall off when I barely tap them that's okay.

I was recently given an orchid which I've loved, but I'm worried it's not doing so well. The last three flowers failed to open and dropped off as buds. No new buds have appeared although the stems were growing. On advice I moved the plant to better light conditions, closer to the West facing window (although the damage may have already been done). In the past two days the tips of the stems have begun to turn brown, and one of the larger leaves has effectively wilted. Any ideas what I've done to cause this, and any help would be gratefully received on what I should do to save it.

I have just recently purchased an orchid plant. It is very pretty and in bloom (sounds like it's a moth variety). My problem is that it has many large roots sticking out of container. I have a moth orchid, that was blooming, but one shoot has completely lost all of its flowers and is yellowy-brown to about one inch of where it shoots off the main stem. The flowers are still flourishing on that main stem. I'm wondering if I should trim off the long yellowy-brown shoot to just where it turns green? And, also, how much watering should I be doing? I don't think I did enough in the beginning. Can you help?

I have a moth orchid. One stem has the last flower that bloomed on it and it is starting to wilt. The other flowers have already bloomed and wilted, which I cut off at the junction of the blooms stem and the main branch. I noticed a little shoot emerging from the end of the main branch. How do I care for it in order to stimulate new flowers? Also, will new shoots emerge from where I cut off the previous flowers that bloomed?

I just bought an orchid at Home Depot without knowing anything about them. This page was very helpful! I also have concerns though. I looked at it very closely and noticed there are tiny little green things on it with six legs (aphids?) They are on all the flowers, and a lot of them. I am assuming this is not a good thing. I have no other house plants, so I am not worried about quarantining it at all. What should I do? Is it bad to have them? How do I get rid of them?

I just became interested in groing orchids indoors. You mentioned they require sufficient humidity. How much is considered sufficient? Our home heating system has a special indicator for humitity. What level of humidity or % of humitity should I adjust?

Also, I am new to your web site. How can I obtain the answers to the questions that other people have asked you? I'm obviously not computer literate!
Thank you for your help.

I have a wonderful orchid that has given me multiple blooms over a period of a year. Currently all the blooms are off and I'm left with the "naked" stakes. My question is, do I cut these back at this time and where should I cut? There are 2 stalks aprox. 16" high each. Also, those crazy roots that grow outside the pot...what the heck do you do with those?

I too am new to the site aned would like to know how to get the answers to all the wonderful questions people ask!

Thanks!

I have an orchid inside my apartment, recently i've noticed white fluffy stuff around the leave growth coming up from the bulbs. I'm assuming this is either scale or mealy bugs. On the leafy portion of the plant I'm wiping the leaf with alcohol swabs, however, I'm not quite sure what to use of the new foalage coming through. Do you have any suggestions?

Regards

Good Day,

I have a zygopetalum which I keep indoors at my office. I have noticed a few black spots on some leaves. I cut the spot off of the tip, but now the dark spot has returned. What could be the cause. I also think that the roots need to be evaluated because as I water it the water just runs right out. Please help

Hi, i think my orchid is a Lady's Slipper, but not sure, i've had it since last year, i let it die down after it had finished flowering and nurtured it and it is now flowered again, 9flowers in all, with 6 plain green leaves. what do i do about repotting it, one root is protruding out of the bottom of pot and is a nice green colour, so healthy, but all others are crambed in the small pot. Will i loose it if i go ahead and re-pot? I would like more flowers to grow later on. Its so pretty.I can send photo if needed.

I was just given 4 Moth Orchids, I have been reading up on the care of them because they have always been a favorite of mine. I put a pan of water on my pellet stove for the humidity, and I am going to get some clay pots to help me keep from overwatering them. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me? I would really like to keep them going, they were a present from my Daughter.
I put the pan on the stove because I live in a dry climate, do you think that is going to be enough humidity or should I try to find a humidifier?
Thank you, D

Dear all, I need some advise from you. Last year I bought this Phalaeonopis Everlasting Orchid. The flower fell off after several months and it lie dorment for sereral months then sereral leaves started to grow. I kept doing what I was doing before gave the plant water, kept the soil moist etc. Where the flower fell off I noticed a bulge, which is about 16" above the soil, beginning to form. After a while I noticed a leave then other and those silver looking runners, roots? showing, appeared as well. Now A different stem appeared and low and behold this new stem contains bulbs, I am getting new flowers without doing anything. I had a second stem with flowers and that one also get new flowers from half way up the old stem. Question for you all How can I separate the new flowers from the original plant without doing any damage to the plant? where do I cut? there are six runners from the new plant.

If the flowerbuds (unopened flowers ) fall off it could be do to either: change of location of the plant, drastic change of tempurature, or to much water.

JS,

Yellow leafs = BIG no-no!!!!! If your orchid has yellow leafs, that means they're 2 dry. Have U been misting your orchid? If not, PLEASE DO!!!!!
I can bet your orchids are trying to say 'WAAAAATERRR!!!!' :) If you HAVE been misting your orchid, do so ONLY on foliage of orchid. The fruitflys might B from U misting the flowers. FLOWER MISTING BAAAAADD!!!!!!!! Seriously, misting the petals give the flower fungus which attracts flys. Don't ask me how I know that.:)

5.When repotting do you need to push the roots down in the bottom of the pot and let them resurface themselves?
6.Do I need to cut the roots a certain length before repotting?
7.How often do I need to fertilize my orchid before and after repotting?

I experienced, what a lot of others had with the same problem- a small cluster of leaves (the starting of a new orchid base) somewhere along the stem. Mine was at the very top of the stem (8 inches from original plant base). No expert seemed to be willing to give clear insightful advice. So I am posting what I found to work on all of these orchid sites remaining adviceless. I found the below directions from eHow.com , after much searching. It was my own conclusion that at sometime or another the new sprout would have to become it's own plant. I grow cacti, outdoor flowers, and herb gardens, so my only original advice would be to wait for the roots to have a healthy growth off the stem, at least 3/4 in to 1 inch, before you seperate, but be sure not to harm any possible roots. That way they will have a good founding root system before the seperation occurs- based on my work with cacti. I especially agree with the advice from eHow and repot the new growth in the same material the original pot, because all plants like to continue to thrive in the same nutrients as the parent.

"When a sympodial orchid grows a pseudobulb that extends beyond the capacity of its pot, the orchid should be re-potted and the pseudobulb removed and potted as a separate plant. Plant the pseudobulb in a potting medium similar to what it grew in originally."

I received an orchid for mothers day. As I am not green fingered at all, I am not sure what type or how to pot it. It does not have any roots and it came in a small plastic pot with a little water, standing in sand. It has flowers and is beginning to die. I want to save it it but I do not know

Whether indoor/outdor plant
how to root it or plant it
and whether it is past repair.

The plant is yellow with red stripey flowers inside. Can you help me as I want to keep this plant as a momentum from my kids, who obviously spent a lot on this flower for me.

I have a phalaenopsis orchard. It has just finished blooming. Should I now cut off the spike at the bottom of the plant? Do I continue to water it while it is not in bloom and how often?. I have been given a beautiful Pink orchid plant, which simply has the latin name phalaenopsis. I have never owned one before, but I want to learn fast how to make sure it lives a long life with me.
I'd appreciate, therefore, the best recommendations so that it survives and blooms as often as possible.
Any and all advise would be welcomed. In particular, when this current bloom ends, do I need to cut it back, etc, etc.
Looking forward to receiving any advice you may offer

I have a question about a moth orchid. Do I cut the long stems when the plant is no longer blooming?

I bought an orchid it is a moth orchid beautiful pinkish color.I have watered it tiny bits of water just in the root areas every few days. It is by the window getting indirect light. It has bloomed about 1 -2 months then I replanted it with a lot of moss and soil to fill the rest of the pot. One of the flowers dried up and fallen off, then another , another and now it looks like the other one is starting, and the last one still blooming nice. Do I let them fall on their own? do I cut them off? Do I replant and use only moss etc? Also, I need to fertilize have just learned need to do this.
I had an orchid before, and I never repotted, I put a small amt of water by the root area, put in the window with a little light and it seemed that the same sort of thing happened.
What do I need to do? I want them to re-bloom.
Please help asap!!!

I have my phalaenopsis orchid and have had it for two years. It has continuously flowered, however the leaves are not as shiny as they were. I have four stems and two have new baby leaves growing on them along with aerial feeders. What do I need to do with it as it appears to be growing out of control or just needs extra attention.

I have an orchid of unknown variety - I won it as a door prize - and at the time that I received it, it had beautiful white blooms. I was told to give it 2-3 ice cubes a week and enjoy. The blooms lasted about a month and then fell off and I cut the remaining stem back to the leaf area as instructed. There are no new buds on it and now it has a white sticky substance at the base of the leaves. It appears to me to be a fungus. What should I do?

This is my first orchid. I bought it in full bloom. It bloomed for about a month and the flowers have all fallen off now. I live in Florida & it is kept indoors away from ceiling fans on a table a few feet away from the window. first the blooms fell off and then the leaves started to turn yellow from a dark green and fell off. It is still in the 4" plastic pot it came in. The roots look green and the top of the pot is covered with a thin layer of moss. do I repot it or just water it once a week. Hate to lose it, anything you can suggest would be appreciated

There are much questions but hardly any answers. After reading all the posts I have found only few suggestions and links that may lead to additional answers to the many similar questions people have. I wish everyone luck with their orchid plants. This is also my first attempt at keeping orchids. It seems they flourish outdoors more easily than indoors.

My daughter gave me a Moth Orchid for my birthday in June. It has done great until last week. We had a family emergency which caused us to be away from home for a full week. I guess it became too dry. It dropped all three of it's remaining blooms and end 50% of the stem has turned brown. Help! What do I do? Is this typical behavior?

My boyfriend gave me an orchid to take care of while I'm at college. But on the ride to Georgia, the blooms started drooping. Now the stems that are closest to the flowers (there are two of them) have started turning yellow. The whole plant looks sickly. I've watered the plant according to some online stuff I've read and i don't think I'm over watering it. I really can't kill this plant. Please help me.

I was in the process of re-potting my orchid, and I accidentally partially broke off the tallest cane(the only one with leaves) and I'm not worried that I may have just killed off my orchid.

All of the blossoms are gone, hence why I was re-potting, and now just curious what I should do with this cane, leave it, cut it off where it broke. Its about 12" tall and it broken off right around 6" up. Its still hanging on right now, I hope someone understands what I mean by partially broken.
Thanks,
Michael

My orchids got to much sun and were burned. The leaves on some are turning white, and dark and looking like they are soft to the touch. Should I remove them or just let the plant deal with the damage? Getting ready to put them under lights. I had them in a great location outside with humid and filtered light. They looked great before I placed them into the sun for a couple of days trying to get them ready to take them under the lights. I am very upset with myself. So I hope I can help them some.
Thanks
Looking forward to your advice.
